View from Dosseringen near the Sortedam Lake, 1838
Christen Købke
Oil on canvas
A quiet Copenhagen lakeside caught in the low light of the Danish Golden Age.
Købke paints the still evening light over a lakeside near Copenhagen, a small jetty reaching into calm water. A gem of Danish Golden Age painting, its clarity, quiet and precisely observed northern light feel serene and quietly timeless.
What you're looking at
Nothing happens. A jetty, flat water, two small figures, and a long evening light coming in almost horizontally. Købke worked a few minutes' walk from his own front door and painted the same lake repeatedly; the whole Danish Golden Age is in the exactness of that light rather than in any subject.
On a Frame TV
About 1.38:1, so the clean crop trims top and bottom. Pale, calm and low in contrast: it wants soft indoor light and will bleach out in sun.
