Luncheon of the Boating Party, c. 1880

Pierre-Auguste Renoir

Oil on canvas · 130.2 x 175.6 cm

Friends linger over wine on a sun-striped riverside terrace.

Renoir gathers his friends on a sun-dappled riverside terrace — food, wine, flirtation and easy laughter. Every face is a real person he knew. Warm, sparkling and utterly alive, it is Impressionism's great celebration of friendship and summer.

What you're looking at

Every face is somebody. Renoir painted his friends at a riverside restaurant at Chatou — the woman playing with the small dog is Aline Charigot, who later married him, and the man straddling a chair backwards in a straw hat is Caillebotte. The still life of bottles and glasses at the front is painted with more attention than several of the people.

On a Frame TV

About 1.39:1. The clean crop trims the awning above and the table below; the matted file keeps them. Warm, dappled and busy — it holds a bright room and rewards a big panel, since half the pleasure is in the faces.
