Mount Fuji glowing red at dawn, stripped down to shape and colour.
In this print from his Thirty-Six Views series, Hokusai shows Mount Fuji flushed deep red at dawn, streaked cloud drifting past. Reduced to a few flat planes of colour, it is minimalism centuries ahead of its time — calm, iconic and graphic.
What you're looking at
The mountain is only that colour for a few days a year, at dawn in late summer, when the snow has gone and the early light catches the bare rock. Hokusai reduces the whole scene to three flat planes — red mountain, blue sky, green forest — plus a band of fish-scale cloud. The red varies a good deal between impressions depending on how the block was inked.

About 1.45:1. Clean crop trims top and bottom and leaves the mountain intact. Flat, saturated and graphic: it reads from the far side of a room and holds up in full daylight, which makes it one of the easiest works here to place.
