Interior. Artificial Light, 1909
Vilhelm Hammershøi
Oil on canvas
A single lamp casts a warm pool of light across an otherwise dim, silent Copenhagen interior.
A room glows under lamplight, its bare walls and quiet shadows tuned to Hammershøi's signature grey stillness. The Danish master finds poetry in emptiness — a hushed, contemplative interior made for a calm and considered space.
What you're looking at
One lamp, one empty room, and a warmth that Hammershoi almost never allowed himself. Everything is grey-brown except the pool of light on the wall, and there is nothing in the space to look at, which is the subject.
On a Frame TV
About 1.39:1, so the clean crop trims lightly. Very low contrast and very dark: an evening picture, and it will vanish on a wall that gets sun.
