A woman turned away in a hushed grey Copenhagen room, still as held breath.
Hammershøi turned his own Copenhagen flat into quiet poetry: bare walls, grey light, a woman seen from behind. This hushed, almost photographic stillness has made the Danish painter a favourite of anyone drawn to calm, muted, contemplative interiors.
What you're looking at
The woman is his wife Ida, painted from behind, as she is in canvas after canvas. Almost nothing else is in the room. The palette runs grey through brown to black with a single warmer note, and the wall behind her is left nearly bare — the emptiness is the composition rather than a background to it.
On a Frame TV
Near square at about 15:16, so the clean crop takes the height that makes the room feel still. Use the matted file. Very low contrast: this needs a dim room to work at all, and full daylight flattens it to a grey panel.
