Sunbeams or Dust Motes Dancing in the Sunbeams, 1858–1861
Vilhelm Hammershøi
Oil on panel
Dust motes catch a shaft of light in an otherwise empty, silent room.
Little happens and that is the point: sunlight slants through a window into an empty room, dust drifting in the beam. Hammershøi turns bare walls and quiet light into something close to meditation — the essence of Nordic calm.
