Swallows in Flight, 1900
Ohara Koson
A pair of swallows bank sharply against an empty, unpainted sky.
Swallows dart across an open ground in a few swift, sure strokes — Koson catches the very speed and lightness of the birds. His early-1900s prints pair Japanese economy of line with a fresh simplicity that sits beautifully in a modern room.
What you're looking at
Four or five strokes a bird, and the birds are all that is in it. Koson leaves most of the sheet empty and lets the diagonal of the flight carry the whole design.
On a Frame TV
About 1:2, so this needs the matted file and will still leave wide margins on a 16:9 panel. Pale and minimal, with no dark anywhere in it — a print that suits a quiet wall and does not compete for attention, and one that a bright room will wash out.
