Willow Bough, 1887
William Morris
Trailing willow leaves interlace into one of Morris's calmest repeat patterns.
Simple willow leaves interweave into an endlessly restful green pattern — one of Morris's best-loved designs, drawn straight from the English countryside he cherished. Calm, natural and timeless, it is decorative art at its most soothing.
What you're looking at
A repeating pattern rather than a picture, so it has no centre and no edges of its own — the design tiles, and wherever you cut it the join would work. Morris drew the willows from the Thames bank at Kelmscott. Three depths of leaf overlap in what is nearly a single green.

About 3:4 as supplied, but this is the one case in the collection where the clean 16:9 crop costs nothing at all: a repeat has no composition to spoil, so crop it wherever you like. Calm, mid-toned and entirely undemanding in any light.
