The Syndics of the Drapers' Guild, 1662
Rembrandt
Oil on canvas · 191.5 x 279 cm
Five cloth inspectors seem to glance up just as the viewer walks in.
Six cloth-guild officials glance up as if we have just interrupted their meeting. Rembrandt's late group portrait is a marvel of naturalism and warm light — each face alive, the whole scene caught in a single, effortless moment of shared attention.
What you're looking at
You are meant to be below it. The painting hung high on a wall, so Rembrandt built the viewpoint from underneath — which is why the table tilts toward you and the men appear to lean out over the edge of it. One of them is half-risen from his chair. X-rays show Rembrandt moved that figure repeatedly before settling on the moment of interruption.
On a Frame TV
About 1.52:1, a reasonable fit — the clean crop trims the panelling above and the table edge below. Warm and dark with strongly lit faces; it works best in a room with lamps rather than sun.
