A couple's hands rest together in a gesture Van Gogh once called impossibly tender.
A man tenderly rests his hand on a woman's breast as she lightly touches his — a portrait of pure marital tenderness. Rembrandt lays on gold and red in thick, glowing paint; van Gogh said he would give years of his life to sit before it.
What you're looking at
The sleeve is the thing. Rembrandt lays the gold on so thickly, with a knife as much as a brush, that it stands off the canvas and catches real light — at 4K you can see the ridges. Van Gogh wrote that he would give ten years of his life to sit in front of it for a fortnight. Nobody knows who the couple are; the title was invented in the nineteenth century and is probably wrong.

About 1.37:1. Clean crop trims top and bottom; the matted file is the safer choice since the composition is already tight around the two figures. Dark, warm and glowing — a lamp-lit room, not a sunny one.
