The Star (Dancer on Stage), 1878

Edgar Degas

A single dancer catches the stage lights, alone at the centre of the frame.

A ballerina bows in a spotlight while a shadowy figure waits in the wings. Degas, working in pastel, captures the glow of the stage and the fleeting grace of the dancer — one of his most luminous and beloved images of the ballet.

What you're looking at

It is pastel, not oil, worked over a monotype print — which is why the light seems to come out of the paper rather than off it. The viewpoint is from above and to the side, the seat of a wealthy subscriber in a box, and that is deliberate. In the wings stands a man in black evening dress, faceless, waiting. Her own face is barely modelled at all: a few strokes, tipped back into the light.

On a Frame TV

About 7:10. Matted file — the clean crop takes the empty stage that gives her the space to be alone in. Bright figure on a dim ground, so it reads well in a lit room without losing the stage-light effect.
