Monet's green wooden footbridge arches over a pond thick with lilies and willow reflection. Painted in his Giverny garden, it fuses architecture and nature into a single cool, calming green — one of the most beloved images in all of Impressionism.
What you're looking at
The bridge is the only straight line in the picture and even that is bent. Everything else — willow, lilies, reflection, water — is the same green worked at different weights, so the pond and the trees above it are made of one substance. Monet built the pond and the bridge himself before he painted either.
