Painted in 1889 during his stay at the asylum in Saint-Rémy, van Gogh set churning cypresses against a sky of rolling, restless cloud. The thick, twisting brushwork makes the whole field feel alive — a landscape that moves.
What you're looking at
The paint stands proud of the canvas. Van Gogh worked wet into wet with a loaded brush, and at 4K you can follow single ridges of pigment through the cloud and count the separate strokes making up the wheat. The cypress rises as a dark flame against the movement, and the low blue ridge behind is the Alpilles, the range he could see from the asylum at Saint-Rémy. Nothing in the picture is still — the sky, the field and the tree are all given the same restless mark.

About 5:4, closer to square than a Frame's 16:9 despite the sense of width the horizon gives it. The clean crop takes the top of the sky, which is where most of the movement is, so use the matted file. Strong colour and high contrast; it holds a bright room easily.
