Sunflowers, 1887

Vincent van Gogh

Oil on canvas · 17 x 24 in. (43.2 x 61 cm)

Van Gogh's ecstatic yellow bouquet, painted to welcome Gauguin to Arles.

Van Gogh's sunflowers, blazing yellow on yellow, were painted in 1888 to brighten the rooms he hoped to share with Gauguin. He treated the humble bloom as a subject worthy of a masterpiece — and turned it into an emblem of his own restless warmth.
