The Tree of Life, 1909
Gustav Klimt
Cardboard · 200 x 102 cm
A spiralling gold tree fills a mural meant for a Brussels dining room.
Golden branches spiral outward in dense, hypnotic curls studded with symbols and pattern. From Klimt's Stoclet Frieze, this Art Nouveau icon fuses ornament, myth and gold into pure decorative rhythm — luminous and endlessly rich as wall art.
What you're looking at
This is a working drawing rather than a painting. Klimt made it full size in gouache, gold and silver on paper as the design for a mosaic — the finished version is in marble, glass and metal on a dining-room wall in Brussels, and cannot be moved or lent. The spiralling branches are drawn as ornament first and tree second, and the eye at the centre of one coil is deliberate.
On a Frame TV
About 1:2. Matted file. Gold on a lit panel is the one case where a screen beats a print outright, so the mat is a fair price — and the pattern is dense enough to read at any size.
