Bathers on a Summer Evening, 1892
Félix Vallotton
Angular bathers crowd a riverbank in flat, sculptural blocks of colour.
Bathers gather by still water in flat bands of colour and simplified, almost dreamlike form. Vallotton's cool, decorative early scene sits somewhere between naïve charm and modern design — calm, patterned and quietly strange.
What you're looking at
Flat bands of colour, figures simplified almost to cut-outs, no modelling and no atmosphere. It was laughed at when it was shown in 1893 for looking naive, which is roughly what a later century decided was good about it. The bathers do not interact and the scale between them does not quite work.
On a Frame TV
About 1.34:1, so the clean crop trims top and bottom without disturbing much — the figures sit well inside the frame. Flat, pale and even in tone, legible at any size and untroubled by a bright room.
