Pissarro looks down a dusty lane to kitchen gardens, white cottages and the green shoulder of Jalais Hill beyond. Painted in 1867, its patchwork of cultivated land under drifting cloud is plain rural France rendered with quiet, sunlit dignity.
What you're looking at
An early Pissarro, and deliberately unpicturesque: a dusty lane, kitchen gardens in strips, whitewashed cottages, and a green hill behind, arranged with none of the framing devices a landscape was supposed to have. The cultivated ground is painted as a patchwork of worked plots rather than as scenery. Zola singled it out for exactly that plainness.
